Parenting coach Roberta Shagam shares how parents can use Thanksgiving to teach children gratitude, kindness, and family values while enjoying holiday traditions.
Introduction
Thanksgiving has always held a special place in my heart. As a parenting coach, I often encourage families to use traditions and celebrations as teaching moments. Thanksgiving is one of the most powerful opportunities to do this. It goes far beyond turkey and pumpkin pie. It’s a time when we reflect on gratitude, togetherness, and the importance of giving; lessons that are deeply relevant for our children today.
Where Thanksgiving Began
Thanksgiving traces back to 1621, when the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people came together to share a harvest meal. While the historical complexities are often debated, the tradition that grew out of it emphasizes gratitude and community. Families gathering around the table, sharing food and appreciation, has become one of the most cherished American holidays.
Helping Children Practice Gratitude
Children naturally get excited about the festive meal, the family gathering, and even the long weekend. But as parents, we can guide them to see Thanksgiving as more than just a holiday, it’s an opportunity to practice gratitude.
Simple rituals like asking each family member to share what they’re thankful for can help children recognise blessings big and small. Gratitude nurtures resilience, strengthens mental well-being, and fosters empathy for others.
Raising Children Who Value Generosity
Another important lesson from Thanksgiving is generosity. When we explain to our children that not everyone has the same opportunities or abundance, we help them see the value of giving. This might look like donating canned goods, volunteering as a family, or simply reaching out to someone who may be alone during the holiday.
Strengthening Family Bonds
Thanksgiving also reminds us of the importance of family bonds. In a world filled with screens, schedules, and stress, sitting down together for a meal offers children the security of belonging. Parents can model presence by putting aside distractions and truly engaging with their children and relatives.
